Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
Compassion-Focused Therapy is a medium-term therapy integrating cognitive-behavioural techniques with principles of compassion and mindfulness. CFT is particularly effective for individuals struggling with self-criticism, shame and low self-esteem, which are often barriers to mental wellbeing.
CFT is underpinned by psychological theories from neuroscience, evolutionary theory and mindfulness-based approaches. These theories provide a framework for understanding how and why compassion can be effective in promoting emotional well-being. Compassion focused therapy is particularly effective for difficulties underpinned by shame and where an individual has a strong ‘internal critic’.
CFT will support you to develop an internal voice of compassion which is shown by research to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety and improve self-esteem ultimately fostering more positive relationship with oneself and others. The goal of CFT is to build inner sense of safety, warmth and self-nurturing, which in turns allows oneself to improve the capacity for self-soothing, self-acceptance and resilience in stressful situations.
CFT has an evidence based for working with shame-based presentations.
