Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a structured, evidence-based psychological treatment that combines principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with mindfulness practices such as meditation and present-moment awareness. Developed primarily to prevent the relapse of depression, MBCT helps individuals recognize and disengage from negative thought patterns that often trigger depressive episodes. Instead of trying to change or suppress distressing thoughts, the therapy teaches participants to observe these thoughts non-judgmentally, creating space between themselves and their mental experiences.

The core idea of MBCT is that by cultivating mindfulness, individuals can become more aware of their automatic cognitive processes and emotional reactions. This awareness allows them to respond to stress or low mood with greater clarity and self-compassion rather than reacting out of habit. MBCT is typically delivered in a group setting over eight weeks and includes practices like body scans, mindful movement, and guided meditations. It has been shown to be effective not only for depression but also for anxiety, stress, and other mood-related conditions.

The therapist guides the client in developing present-moment awareness and a non-judgmental attitude toward thoughts and emotions, creating space to respond more skillfully to distress rather than reacting automatically.

This approach is especially helpful for those with a history of recurrent depression, anxiety, or stress-related difficulties.
